Why People Attend High School Reunions

Friday, March 14th, 2008

By Robert Hirscheimer High school is an experience that depends entirely on your place in the social realm of your class. For some, it is the best time of their life, and for others it is the worst. More often then not, what follows in college and in the real world is diametrically opposed to what happened in high school. That is why after several years go by, there is some interest by all classmates to attend their high school reunion. The cool kids want to re-live their youth and visit the grounds where they felt on top of the world, and the nerds want to show everyone how far they have come. There are other things that come into play as well. As time passes, classmates put on weight, and lose their hair. The real question is how much hair and how much weight. This is the number one thing that brings people together for class reunions - curiosity. Beyond that, there is the desire to rekindle the relationships that were so important in our teen years. We will never forget our high school friendships or the experiences that were critical in molding who we are today. In a class reunion survey done by http://Myevent.com 87% of classmates that attended their class reunion found the reunion to be extremely gratifying, and said they would attend the next class reunion as well. So, whether out of curiosity, to show off, or for re-establishing old ties, class reunions seem to be more popular than ever. It is indeed noteworthy that reunions have become a fabric of our society. In the last year, many old television shows have had reunion episodes and a whole series was devoted to a high school reunion. So, if you should get an invitation to your high school reunion, do not pass on the chance to go back in time and re-visit old friends and foes. You may be able to reconnect with some of your best friends you have ever had and establish new relationships with people you didnt even know existed. Make Your Own Snag-Free Sinkers (Slinky Sinkers)

Monday, March 10th, 2008

By M. Becatti After seeing a pair of snag-free sinkers at local tackle shop going for $5.00 I decided to do a little research on snag-free sinkers to see if I could make my own. I have been fishing with guides who made their own and figured there would be something on the internet about it. A quick search on Google landed me on the Forum of KatMasters.com. I found a couple of posts about the snag-free sinkers and decided to make them myself. Listed below are step-by-step instructions on how to make your own snag-free (slinky) sinkers. It is not rocket science, but I figured an article would help. Materials & Tools Nylon boot laces Size BB Split-shot Pliers Lighter Drinking Straw Knife or Scissors Step 1: Determine how much split-shot to use. I didn’t have anything to measue how many ounces a single piece of split shot was, so back to Google I went. I found that 9 pieces of size BB split-shot weighs 5 grams. Great, but how many grams are in an ounce? Google says: 1 gram = 0.0352739619 oz. So I got out the old calculator and figured that roughly 50 pieces of size BB split-shot make up an ounce. After laying out my 50 pieces, I quickly noticed that my finished sinker would be over 9 inches long. I decided to make 1/2 oz sinkers with what I had and to go back to Bass Pro Shops and get larger split-shot for my 1 oz sinkers. Step 2: Cut the ends off of the boot laces. You will see an inner lace and an outer nylon shell. Pull the inner piece out of the shell. You will be left with the outer nylon. Step 3: (Optional) - Cut a drinking straw at an angle so you can use it to funnel the split-shot into the end of the lace. If you do not use a straw, the end of the lace will unravel more than if you did use a straw. The straw that I used was too big around to stick it completely into the lace. If I had a smaller straw or a lace with a larger diameter it probably would have worked better. Step 4: Since I was making a 1/2 oz sinker with size BB split-shot I found that it was best to put the shot in 3 at a time and pinch it down the lace until it was in the lace about 1 inch longer than the length of a finished sinker. Since my final product was 4.5 inches, I pushed the split-shot down to 5.5 inches from the end of the lace. This left enough lace at the end to cut off and melt. I also found that pinching the split-shot closed made it slide down the lace easier. Step 5: Next I held the end of the lace with my side-cutter pliers. These worked great because I could clamp onto the end of the lace very easily. Needle-nose pliers would work fine here too. Step 6: Next use the lighter to melt the end of the lace. Be sure to place something on top of your work area to prevent a “wife delivered knot” from forming on your head…er to prevent hot burning nylon from damaging the work surface (dining room table in my case). Step 7: While the nylon is still hot, use the pliers to pinch the end of the lace closed. This also makes it easier to get the snap-swivel on. Step 8: Last, add the snap-swivel to the end of the sinker. With 1 box of split shot containing 150 pieces, I was able to make six 1/2oz sinkers. After adding it all up they came out to $0.83 a piece. (It is actually a little less because I had some material left over.) Compared to $2.50 a piece this was a steal. This was my first time trying to do this and I was able to make 1 sinker in 5 minutes. I am sure once I start doing this more, I will get quicker. Things I would do different. Use a larger size of split-shot - BB was just too small. A 1 oz sinker would have been over 9 inches long. Larger diameter rope - The boot laces worked great for size BB split-shot, but I would need something bigger if I went to a larger size. Smaller snap-swivel - I think I could have gotten by with size 5 instead of size 3. Use lead (shotgun) shot instead of split shot. - This will save time closing the split shot. The Best Pond Heaters, Designed Especially For Your Koi Pond!

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

By Anne Clarke Some of the very first pond heaters were electric. These kinds of pond heaters are not recommend strongly by anyone in the business because with electric pond heaters there are many dangers. Often, electric pond heaters will short circuit hurting or even killing your pond fish. Heated coils for other such technological pond heating equipment can be more easily and less dangerously used. The water is boiled by a hot water heater. However, this is not the same as wonderful equipment available on the market today. These kinds of heating systems are more elaborate, on the other hand, these kinds of heating devices for ponds can be expensive compared to other, and especially older models. With any water heater you want the pond temperature to remain in the vicinity of about 40 degrees (precisely, 39-42 is an acceptable range.) Pay close attention to the temperature of your pond water as the seasons change. If you do not, once the water approaches 50 degrees parasites and active bacteria have already begun to grow. If the water gets up to 60 degrees, your fish will no longer have immune systems. If the springtime is long and the weather unpredictable you must keep constant watch over the temperature of your outdoor pond or garden pond. Compact systems for pond heaters are trendy and extremely reliable. Their popularity has risen as quickly as the technology that virtually dictated its success. Pond and garden lovers everywhere are happy to have a pond heating system to keep their pond healthy through the inevitable cold. There are even more discount prices for less high technological heating systems available on the market but ones that are still perfectly reliable and simple to maintain. A thirty-dollar oil-filled radiator can be placed beneath the pond cover. Be sure that the radiator is in a secure, level place and adjust the temperature accordingly. There are many kinds of pond supplies available to keep you pond heated and healthy when it starts to get cold. Of course, the particular design of your personal pond water heater will depend on the design of the pond itself. “Trading Spouses” Teaches Relationship Building Through Cooking

Friday, March 7th, 2008

By Laura Bankston Last night I watched a television show. It was rather hilarious and disturbing at the same time. I was actually talking to my mother when I first heard about it. I called her to chat and she told me she was watching this show called Trading Spouses. Isnt that name terrible? I couldnt believe my Mom was watching such a thing. But, after she told me about it, it sounded hilarious, so I decided to check it out when it came on in my time zone (we have a four hour time difference). And she was right, it was hilarious. So, I watched it with my husband last night. Now, Im not a big reality show fan. So, Ill get to the point in a second. So, anyway, last nights show was about two husbands that traded places. The one was a New York City lawyer who lived in Manhattan and he changed places with a low income worker who lived in the country in Georgia. (Okay, and just to clarify for those of you whose minds might be going elsewhere there was no hanky panky going on) So, you can imagine the difference in life style! The country guy had his very first plane ride to get to New York, and he was blown away by the speed of life. The rich mans kids were great; but his wife was a witch. Shocked that he was never at a restaurant that required dressing up, bragging about their beach home being worth $2-3 million, freaking out when someone walked into the kitchen with sand on their shoes, and nagging and pushing the son about getting his bar mitzvah speech right especially since the affair was costing about as much as a wedding. They city guy was in culture shock too. The house was run down and messy; and the kids were NIGHTMARES! They were totally out of control. Unfortunately, I have seen kids that bad before in real life but its been awhile. They were hitting, fighting, ignoring their mom, telling the man to shut up can you believe it? And this was good behavior in front of the television crew and visitors? It was really awful. So, here were two examples of BAD family relationships. A rich family with kids that behaved - but they couldnt enjoy their family life because it was to much go, go go with a Mom that was wound up so tight that shed wring the enjoyment out of everything. And a low income family with a family life but one that sucked because the Mom couldnt stand to be around her kids. Oh and you know what the Mom said about her bratty kids? She said that she tried everything. She tried sitting down and talking with them, she tried taking away toys, she tried sitting them in time-out. She tried it all, but nothing worked. Hmmmmm. Seems she left out THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE! The controlled, loving, whack across the caboose. When are parents going to get it that loving, proper, consistent discipline when theyre young means that theyll be controlled, loving, children that behave when they are 6, 7, and up. AND children cant be happy if they arent disciplined. You can see it on their faces. Whiney, out-of-control children are miserable. And so is everyone around them, for that matter. Whens the last time that youve seen a miserable, well disciplined child? You havent. I mean, there are a few moments of bad attitude or whatever that quickly goes away with correction; but they are basically happy, content, and secure. So, anyway, back to my story. Each family was getting $50,000 for the trade. But the catch was that the visiting spouse made the decision of how the other family would spend their $50,000. The rich mans answer to fix the low income family? Buy the house, remodel it basically improve material possessions. The country mans answer to fix the wealthy family? Family relationship counseling, cooking lessons, and family vacation time. And you guessed it the rich wife flipped out she was planning on using the $50,000 to pay for her sons bar mitzvah!! But, Ill say one thing. The country man was right on for what that family needed. Less focus on things and more focus on relationships. Actually, he was downright clever. He showed America the #1 way to build family relationshipsCooking together. Ahem. Ring a bell? Cooking creates family bonds across all ages across all abilities. Too bad the country man didnt have more of that wisdom to have disciplined kids too. So, if youre already ahead of the game with well behaved kids dont forget about the relationship side of things. And dont overlook the easiest, most funnest ( he, he), I mean fun way to spend time with you kids COOKING!!!! Laura Bankston is author of Homeschool Cooking in a Box and the Homeschool Cookbook. Double Denominations One of the Holy Grails

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

By Brad Hall There are error coins that many collectors view as the one coin that they would love to own. For many, this coin or coins represent the holy grail of their collection and there are few that rank as high as the double denominations error. This one error type is one of the most valuable and rare errors that have ever been released from the mint. Double denominations occur when a previously struck coin is struck again by another set of dies in another denomination. Often times this is the result of the mint using a coin to test the dies and somehow the test coin escapes the mint. It is thought that this occurs because a worker smuggles the coin out of the mint because they know that such an example would be worth a good amount of money. Other times it simply slips through the cracks. Double denominations are not coins that one would easily find in pocket change but it is not unheard of to catch one if you are very lucky. This is the case with one of the most famous double denomination coins that have been found in recent years. A man who worked in a gas station received a coin that he thought to be a foreign dime. Later on in the evening he checked the coin again only to discover that what he had was what has come to be known as an 11 cent piece. The coin was a previously struck Roosevelt dime and a Lincoln cent had been struck over it. This is something that happens once in a lifetime. There are other examples of the double denominations error but they are very difficult to come by. Some of the more prolific error coin dealers have some fine specimens but they sell for more than $100,000 in the open market and can reach prices of more than double that amount in a well advertised auction setting. You should be careful when purchasing a double denomination coin that is priced well below market value. There are fakes floating around that have little or no value at all. Sadly many people in the world will try and take advantage of the new collectors and sell coins that are nothing more than reproduced errors. Do your homework and protect yourself from making a bad investment. Brad Hall is the editor for http://us-mint-coins.blogspot.com the number one resource for double denominations errors errors on the web. Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

By Jerome Sturgeleski Lets assume youve just completed an extensive landscaping project. You spent a lot of time planning and now its finished and you want to just sit back and enjoy. But, as the daylight fades, you start to lose sight of it all. You think, wow, theres got to be a way to enjoy this after dark. You think, maybe some type of lighting, but what. You think that you hate to have wires hanging over your newly designed space, and you hate to think about digging up your new sod just to put in wires. You think, even after the lights are in, and what if they dont give you the effect you wanted. The solution to this is to add solar lights. Solar Lights come in many different styles, shapes, material, colors and designs. There are solar lights that would enhance any landscape. There are price ranges from very modest to very expensive. You just have to decide they budget you want and start shopping. There are solar lights that will allow you to light up things like trees, shrubs, fences, or even house numbers or flag poles. These types are often spotlights and can be places anywhere and moved easily till you get the right effect. There are solar rock lights that can be added to your rock garden to illuminate your different rock collections and design. Solar rock lights are spotlights and can also be used where that type of lighting is needed. There is solar rock stepping stone lights. These lights come in 10 12 inch square or round shapes. They have a solar light in the middle of the stone and allow a walkway to be illuminated at night. Imagine taking a stroll at midnight under the glow of the moon and finding your way to the far reaches of you yard using the glow of these stepping-stones. There are a variety of solar landscape lights that can line a pathway or just line the perimeter of a flower garden or rock garden as was mentioned before. These come in a large selection of styles, shapes and colors. Some of them even illuminate in different colors. If that isnt enough, there are different solar novelty lights that come in a variety of animal and amphibian shapes. To mention a few; there are dog figures holding a solar lantern, a frog spot light, an owl with a solar spot light, or a gnome holding a spot light or lantern. There are so many different types of solar lights available that you will never need to leave your yard or patio in the dark again. Just use your imagination and watch your space become an after dark wonderland. The New Marriage - Part Four of Four

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

By Dr. Linda Miles When we are children we do not yet have an identity. We learn about who we are through the mirroring that we get from our parents. It is called mirroring to describe the ability of good parents to gently hold up an imaginary mirror in front of the child until they learn to see themselves clearly without harsh judgments. If we do not get enough realistic mirroring during the years we live with them, we remain pretty clueless about who we really are. I am always so pleased to see parents who appropriately mirror their children. By providing them feedback about their behavior without shame or blame, parents help children grow up with a realistic self-image and the ability to operate from a strong sense of self. In my childrens book, Amanda Salamander, written with Martin Terrell, we tell the story of a beautiful young salamander who changes herself into the color of whomever she is with so that they will like her. This is quite characteristic of what we learn to do when we do not have a good picture of who we are. In the story, Amanda Salamander turns into the color of her husband so that he will like her. This brings many problems into their marriage, because she is not being true to herself. We wrote Amanda Salamander to advise children of the perils of entering a relationship by pretending to be someone else. When we read this story to our five-year-old granddaughter, she already understood what we were talking about. We asked her what the lesson was in this story and she responded, You should stay your same color when you get married. However, we first need to know what our true color is! An example of a parent doing a good job of mirroring a sense of self to her children without shame and blame occurred one day when we took a picture of a group of neighborhood children. Except for one four-year-old girl well call Lillith, all the children were boys. Lillith wanted to be in the middle of the picture, and when the boys refused, she began to whine. Its not hard to guess the reaction of young boys to a whining girl. This behavior was obviously not in her best interest. Lilliths mother wisely called her over to the side and knelt down to her level. She explained, Lillith, you know that thing you do that causes you problems? You are doing it right now. What this woman was doing so naturally was mirroring back behavior that was not in the childs best interest without sounding overly judgmental. Therefore, she was helping Lillith to begin to look at her own behavior and to self-correct. Consequently, Lillith pushed herself into the middle of the boys and they seemed to respect this behavior and allowed her to get her picture taken. Ultimately, that is not the behavior that we would want to encourage. Lillith, however, is beginning to experiment with something different based on her mothers mirroring. Sadly, I have seen countless adults who really do not have a sense of who they are. I was present when one woman realized that when her husband had asked her to marry him, all she had thought about was whether he would want to marry her. She had never even asked herself whether she might want to marry him. The clinical term for the development of a self is differentiation . Developed by a brilliant family therapist named Murray Bowen, this concept refers to our ability to be close to others and also maintain a sense of self. This is perhaps the most difficult task that we have in our lives. It requires a great deal of learning and trial and error to begin to figure out who we are. We are not doomed if we do not develop an accurate mirror as children. This can be developed through our relationships as adults. Wedding Etiquette: Things a Groom Should Know About Wedding

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

By Michael Louis You as the groom will want to choose a few men to carry out the responsibilities that are traditionally assigned to male. You may want to choose your best friend, your college buddies, and maybe even your brother to do it. You should know that they are not only there for formalities sake but they do have responsibilities as well and you should be the one to tell them about it. The first person you should tell about his responsibilities is the best man or the head groomsman. You should tell him that his role is very important so the wedding will go on smoothly. The best man is simply an all-in-one guy who is your friend, your organizer, your coach, your confidant and your advisor who basically has a lot of responsibilities. The best man is also the man who will encourage you whenever you feel stressed out during the planning and the preparation of the wedding. He is also responsible for organizing the bachelor party and makes sure of the travel arrangement for the bride and groom. It is unavoidable that there will sometimes be problems before or during the wedding. The best man is responsible to find a solution for it. Like, when the flowers havent arrived yet, he is responsible to make sure that the flowers arrive on time before the wedding ceremonies. He should also supervise the groomsmen and ushers during the wedding and should accompany them to the tailor for fitting of their formal attires. The best man is also responsible for the safekeeping of the ring, safekeeping of the marriage license just before the wedding, is the official witness to the vows, and is responsible for the clergymans fee. The best man is also the one to make the first toast in the wedding party and he should make it sweet and short. The others, the groomsmen and the ushers, serves as the assistant to the best man. They are like the hospitality committee responsible for greeting the guests and escort them to the church and also greet guests in the wedding party. The ushers will also be responsible taking the guests to their respective seats in the wedding party. They will be the one to guide the guests around the reception room and accompany them until they reach their table and are comfortable. These are some of the things you should know about. You are not the only one who will handle every single detail about the wedding. These people are your friends and they are the few good men who will get you through your big day that can be frustrating, exhausting and sometimes nerve-racking. You can show your appreciation to your groomsmen, best man, and ushers by giving them a small token of thanks, like cuff links, studs, or if you can afford it, monogrammed shirts. Always remember that these men are there to help you and they are not only there for formalitys sake. You should tell them that this honor will come with responsibilities. You should make it clear to them what their responsibilities are, what they should do and what you expect them to do. Weddings are one of the most memorable occasions in a mans life and sometimes also one of the most nerve-racking experiences. So, if you want it to go smoothly, be sure to tell your chosen few good men about their duties and responsibilities. Your bride will never be happier if the wedding goes smoothly as planned.
